The pumpkin originated in Mexico about 9000 years ago. “Pumpkin” comes from the Greek word for “large melon,” which is “pepon.”

Native Americans used pumpkins in a variety of ways, from eating them to drying strips of pumpkins to make into mats. Pumpkins are a fruit that belongs to the cucurbitacae family, which includes cucumbers, melon, and squash. Pumpkins grow on a green bushy vine along the ground. Male and female blossoms appear and open for a day. The pollen from the male blossom is transferred to the female flowers by bees, and then the pollinated blossoms develop into pumpkins.

Pumpkin plants are hearty and strong and a pumpkin vine can grow as much as six inches a day! They need a sunny spot and a lot of water to grow and thrive. By late August the green pumpkins will begin to change colors. About four months after planting, they’re ready to be harvested.

Antarctica is the only continent where pumpkins cannot grow.

P is for Pumpkin Patch

Pick a pumpkin from a patch.

No two pumpkins are a match.

Cut the vine, but if they’re fat don’t pick them up or they’ll go splat!
